Wauwatosa's earliest commerce and architecture are vital aspects of its historical character. The Little Red Store is an important survivor from Wauwatosa's earliest history, having served throughout the years as a dwelling, the oldest post office building in Milwaukee County, a railroad depot, general store, library, Republican Party headquarters, harness shop, grocery, and plumbing shop. Many of the trades the building sheltered are things of the past that deserve to be commemorated for their contributions to the development of Wauwatosa. The Little Red Store is designated as one of the Wisconsin Trust For Historic Preservation's "Ten Most Endangered Historic Properties." The designation of such properties focuses public and media attention on them, and assists in their preservation. This prestigious program helps to generate interest and support throughout Wisconsin for the identified sites, and has resulted in several successful projects to save historic properties.
